Project Overview
A new build, 2-storey steel frame combined fire and ambulance station on the site of the existing Wigan Fire Station. Facilities include offices, a gym, community rooms, training suites, a make-ready bay, an appliance bay, a training tower, covered wash-down areas, external vehicle canopies and a fuel station.
Despite a tight budget, the team value engineered circa £350k from the project whilst maintaining a first-class design on one of the busiest and most prominent roundabouts in Wigan. An underground storage tank was found on site which was not shown on any record drawings, which we advised on and de-commissioned.
This is the first joint service Fire and Ambulance station in the region and will be the pilot for future joined services. 10 ambulance stations are being shut down and combined into this one Hub to create a more efficient service.
The Challenge
The fire station was housed in a temporary facility on site and was ‘live’ throughout. This was particularly challenging for Curtins, as this meant the access point was to be shared between the construction workers and the emergency vehicles.
Our Solution
Through efficient planning and clear communication, Curtins were able to keep the access point clear to maintain the station’s 11-minute response time, meaning that all access, delivery and parking restrictions were strictly adhered to.
