Project Overview
A £20m theatre located in the city centre of Shrewsbury. The modern building comprises a 650-seat main auditorium with a fly tower with full flying capacity. In addition, there is a 250-seat studio theatre, dance studio, office accommodation, bar and entertainment facilities with a converted chapel.
The building was constructed over the historic abutments of the 13th-century St Georges Bridge.

The Challenge
Flood risk at ground floor level. The project also comprised the retrofitting of an existing chapel, which was to project into the modern elevation, as well as the proximity of St George’s Bridge as a constraint.
Our Solution
To overcome the floor risk and fulfil the flood protection requirements, the main stage was designed at first floor level.
We have extensive experience in sensitively repairing, retrofitting and maintaining heritage structures, and applied our conservation approaches to refurbish the existing chapel and protect the archaeological features of the 13th century bridge abutments.
Awards
