Project Overview
Pentre Awel is one of the largest and most prestigious schemes in South Wales and will provide world-class medical research and health care delivery.
This project is the first of its size and scope within the region, providing crucial jobs and services to South Wales. The iconic central building sits on a complex site and comprises a hybrid structure, including long span steel structures to create large flexible spaces, and glulam elements to the leisure facilities.
The structural frame of the 5 blocks is predominantly a composite steel frame supporting precast concrete planks. The timber glulam frame to the swimming pool is well suited to the humid climate conditions, with imposing fishbelly beams spanning long distances across the various pools.
Conscious choices have been made by the design team and contractor to source labour and material within the area local to the project, providing lasting economic and social benefits.
The Challenge
The complex site is located in an area of natural beauty, around a freshwater lake and within walking distance of the Millennium Coastal Park.
Our Solution
We developed an outline drainage strategy for the development that maximised the use of above ground surface water conveyance, treatment and rainwater reuse while exploiting opportunities to increase the biodiversity and amenity potential of the site.
Following close liaison with the SAB officer, the SAB pre-application was approved and detailed design completed to achieve full compliance with the SAB and SuDs requirements by delivering a functional, attractive and sustainable drainage design.
