Project Overview
This footbridge sits within Keynsham Memorial Park and crosses the River Chew in the vicinity of Avon Mill Lane and Bath Hill. The bridge was closed to the public in October 2019 when a visual inspection concluded the structure was unsafe for public use, due to deterioration of the timber glulam beams forming the superstructure.
Curtins were appointed to design a new Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) superstructure which replaced both spans of the existing bridge with a single span – the total weight of which is similar to the previous timber deck thus allowing us to re-use the existing abutments.
Our team have delivered an elegant new bridge for the local community, adding tremendous social value to what was also a technically excellent project.
The Challenge
The north abutment wall was a substantial structure and the percentage load increase was negligible. The south side was less strong.
Our Solution
We supplemented the wall with two vertically placed mini-piles to assist with carrying the increased load. Both walls were tied back to the retained earth to strengthen the whole assembly against adverse lateral loading.
Awards
Shortlisted for Integration and Collaborative Working at the Constructing Excellence South West Awards 2024.
