Project Overview
This facility has seen Cardiff University’s School of Healthcare Sciences located to a single site for the first time since its inception; providing an increased number of teaching and immersive educational spaces for students and teachers alike.
The Health Care Relocation involved the refurbishment of two buildings in the former Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) site. The building was originally built as a military hospital during the post-war period.
The buildings are now used by Cardiff University to accommodate the healthcare school’s new teaching and practical spaces and include the addition of new offices, a simulation suite based on a realistic hospital ward setting, student study and breakout spaces and additional welfare facilities.
Curtins provided civil/structural and geo-environmental engineering on this project, which included a retrospective SuDs Installation and SAB.

The Challenge
The project entailed re-purposing and extending the life of an existing building which was originally built as a military hospital during the post-war period.
Our Solution
The structure included a unique form of slab construction, comprising a rare hollow block system. Load capacity limitations required a considered and careful approach to equipment and change of use. Cracking to the external façade required strengthening, to facilitate the introduction of new larger windows.
