Project Overview
This Category B prison comprises a 140-cell facility, surrounded by a 5.2m high precast concrete perimeter walls. The only interruption to the secure perimeter is the two-storey Gatehouse building.
Within the secure perimeter there are numerous buildings including a workshop, five wing blocks, a central hub area, kitchens, educational and recreational buildings.
Structural steelwork was the preferred construction material for the majority of buildings, although the wing blocks were designed with precast reinforced concrete, delivered to site as flat packs assembled on site using insitu concrete stitches.
At the time of completion, the £41.7m facility was the Isle of Man Government's largest capital project undertaken.
The Challenge
As the largest capital project for the Isle of Man at the time, not all apects of the off-site construction could be manufactured on the island.
Our Solution
The cellular accommodation was constructed using pre-cast concrete panels, which were shipped to the island from a specialist manufacturer and transported by road to Jurby.
