- Low Carbon Cumbria: Construction Spotlight
On Thursday, 28th November, we proudly partnered with the Lake District National Park and Cumbria Action for Sustainability to host Low Carbon Cumbria: Construction Spotlight at North Lakes Hotel & Spa in Penrith.
It was fantastic to see a full room, brimming with fresh knowledge and diverse perspectives. The event focused on tackling carbon reduction in the national park and the wider Cumbrian region, which includes significant residential and industrial areas.
Karen Mitchell and Tina Holt from Cumbria Action for Sustainability set the scene by addressing the climate emergency. Our Director, Andy Roberts, shared the innovative engineering methods Curtins are implementing to actively reduce embodied carbon in both new builds and retrofits.
Rose Lord, Built Environment Advisor from the Lake District National Park Authority, showcased successful retrofitting examples. She also highlighted cases where modern aesthetics negatively impacted the breathability and water permeability of old buildings, guiding us through best practices for conservation and maintenance.
The day's agenda included insightful discussions led by four additional panellists on Decarbonisation and Construction & Sustainability skills in Cumbria:
Diane Hubbard, Founder of Green Footsteps Ltd
Emma Porter, Managing Director of Story Contracting Limited & Founder of The Rebuild Site
Alex Isted, Area Director of Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure
Lee Todd, Curriculum Operations Leader for Construction at Lakes College West Cumbria
Thank you to all our panellists and speakers for sharing insights and the impactful work their businesses are doing, and to all those who joined us.
