Curtins Networking Breakfast: How to Deliver Embodied Carbon Targets
Tuesday 7th November 2023, 8.00-10.30am
The Watershed, 1 Canon's Rd, Bristol BS1 5TX
Almost half the UK's annual carbon emissions are attributed to buildings and the construction industry. As responsible professionals in a Climate Emergency, we must reduce the carbon impact of our projects.
Since 2019, we have been following our 7 steps to carbon reduction - measuring and recording the embodied carbon of 200 projects in our database. This has allowed us to target a reduction in their current average embodied carbon from 340kgCO2e/m2 to 295kgCO2e/m2 by 2030.
Hosted by Curtins, the event will provide insight into how clients, design teams and the industry can work together to consider carbon cost during the concept design phases and when deciding whether existing buildings can be retained and retrofitted for more sustainable outcomes. Key influencers will set out the pathways to establishing meaningful targets and project strategies. They will discuss how embodied carbon and operational carbon must be considered together to achieve a whole-life solution, using exemplar case studies.
Bristol City Council will be joining us to talk about their new Local Plan, which will be published for formal representations in November. The Local Plan sets out how Bristol will develop over the next 20 years and, for the first time, includes embodied carbon targets for major developments. Ben Smallwood, Sustainable City Team Manager for Bristol City Council will provide an overview of the new embodied carbon policy and what this means for future developments.
